Before my eyes fully open, my thumb is already moving.

I don't decide it. It happens before I decide anything. The phone is on the nightstand, the screen lights up with the first touch, and in the fifteen seconds that follow — before coffee, before saying good morning to anyone, before knowing what day it is — my nervous system has already processed three bad news stories, two other people's outrages, and a headline engineered specifically so I couldn't stop reading it.

That ritual lasts fifteen seconds. And in those fifteen seconds, something gets decided that takes me the rest of the day to correct — or not correct.

I. The Wrong Question

For years I believed optimism and pessimism were temperament. Personality traits, like height or the tone of your voice — things you either have or don't, end of story.

Martin Seligman, the psychologist who founded the field of positive psychology, spent much of his career dismantling that idea. What he documented isn't that some people are born optimists and others pessimists. It's that there's something called explanatory style — the way each person interprets what happens to them — and that style is learned, practiced, and can be modified with the same effort it takes to learn a language (Seligman, Learned Optimism, 1990).

The pessimist explains bad things as permanent, widespread, and personal: this is never going to change, this ruins everything, this is my fault. The optimist explains the exact same event as temporary, specific, and external: this will pass, this only affects this one area, this has causes that don't depend on me alone.

Same event. Different interpretation.

There's what had escaped me for years: pessimism isn't what happens to you. It's what you decide what happens to you means.

"And if it's a decision, then the right question was never 'Am I an optimist or a pessimist?' It was: What am I deciding, fifteen times a day, without realizing I'm deciding anything?"

II. The System That Evolved for a Different World

There's a reason the mind weights the negative more than the positive, and it isn't weakness of character. It's design.

Baumeister and colleagues documented it with a title that needs no metaphor: bad is stronger than good. The bad outweighs the good — in memory, in attention, in decision-making, in almost any psychological domain you care to measure. Rozin and Royzman arrived at the same conclusion from a different angle: they called it negativity dominance, and showed that a single negative event is enough to contaminate the evaluation of ten positive ones, while the reverse almost never happens (Baumeister et al., 2001; Rozin & Royzman, 2001).

This isn't a factory defect. It's a survival tool miscalibrated for the world we live in today.

In a low-information environment — the savanna, the village, any setting where threats were scarce and concrete — overweighting the negative saved lives. The rustling in the grass was probably the wind. But the ten percent of the time it wasn't, that bias kept you alive. The mind that learned quickly from bad events left more descendants than the mind that calmly evaluated every rustle before reacting.

The problem is that this threat-detection system — built for a scare every ten days — now receives thousands of stimuli per hour, all designed to activate it.

III. The System That Attacks Itself

There's a disease I know from having seen it up close in someone I love: the immune system, trained over millions of years to recognize invaders, begins to confuse the body's own tissue with the enemy. It attacks what it should protect. Not because it's broken — because it has lost the ability to distinguish a real threat from a false signal.

I think something similar is happening to our attention, at a collective scale.

Brady and colleagues published a finding in 2017 that should trouble anyone who uses social media: each additional moral-emotional word in a message — every "outrageous," every "shameful," every "betrayal" — increased the probability that message would be shared by roughly twenty percent. Not the quality of the argument. The emotional charge of the word (Brady et al., PNAS, 2017).

Vosoughi, Roy, and Aral confirmed the pattern at larger scale in Science: false news spreads faster, farther, and deeper than true news — not because people prefer to lie, but because the false tends to be more novel and triggers stronger emotions: fear, disgust, surprise. The algorithms weren't designed to lie. They were designed to maximize attention time. And they discovered, without intending to, that fear and outrage retain attention better than almost anything else (Vosoughi, Roy & Aral, Science, 2018).

The result is a system that trains, minute by minute, exactly the bias we already came with from the factory — but now without the scarcity that once kept it calibrated. The rustling in the grass now sounds every three seconds. And the system, which cannot distinguish a real threat from a signal optimized to resemble one, starts treating every stimulus as if it were the tiger.

"That isn't information. It's an autoimmunity of attention. And like every autoimmune condition, it doesn't feel like illness. It feels like vigilance. Like being informed. Like being right."

IV. What Confirmation Bias Does with What Already Hurts

There's a second piece that worsens the mechanism, and it's older than the internet: confirmation bias.

Nickerson documented it in a review that remains essential reading: we seek, interpret, and remember information in ways that confirm what we already believed — and we discard, almost without noticing, what contradicts it. This isn't an occasional failure. It's the mind's default operating mode (Nickerson, 1998).

Combined with negativity dominance, the result is a perfect trap: if my baseline is already tilted toward interpreting the bad as permanent and widespread, each new piece of negative information confirms that story — and each positive piece gets read as an exception, as luck, as something that doesn't change the underlying pattern.

The pessimist doesn't see more bad things than the optimist. They see the same things, and use them to confirm a story they had already decided to believe before those things happened.

V. The Narrow Mind

In another essay I wrote about what happens to the brain under threat — how the field of vision narrows, how deliberate thinking loses control to reactive thinking. I don't want to repeat that here. But it's worth naming the connection: a state of constant perceived threat — which is exactly what continuous consumption of content designed to outrage produces — keeps the mind in that narrow state chronically, not just at the moment of crisis.

Fredrickson demonstrated this from the opposite direction: positive emotions aren't just pleasant. They broaden the repertoire of thought and action — they allow you to see more options, connect more distant ideas, tolerate more uncertainty without shutting down. Negative emotions do exactly the opposite: they narrow the focus to the immediate threat (Fredrickson, 2001).

An executive, a parent, a negotiator, a citizen who spends the day in a state of chronic threat — even if the threat is purely informational, even if it never materializes into anything concrete — is making every decision of their day with a reduced field of vision.

And the best decisions almost never get made with a reduced field of vision.

VI. Why Today It Weighs More Than Before

Here's what strikes me as most important about all of this — and why I started writing this essay in the first place.

Before, if you did nothing — if you simply lived your life without seeking information — the default result was neutrality. Silence didn't train anything. The absence of stimulus didn't build a bias.

Today, doing nothing isn't neutral. Today, doing nothing is letting your thumb decide for you, fifteen times a day, reinforcing exactly the system that already came calibrated to overweight threat.

"The default of 2026 isn't neutral. It's pessimism trained by design, outrage optimized by engineering, confirmation of the worst served in the exact order that confirms it most."

That's why the decision not to be a pessimist has stopped being a personality trait of optimistic people and become something closer to a discipline of resistance.

It doesn't mean denying what's wrong. Bad data is data, and you have to look at it straight. Denying the data isn't optimism. It's another form of blindness.

Being optimistic, in the sense that matters here, doesn't mean believing everything will turn out fine. It means refusing to let the default interpretation — permanent, widespread, personal — win without a fight. It means applying, deliberately, the other explanatory style: this is temporary, this is specific, this has causes that don't depend on me alone. Not because it's prettier. Because it's almost always more accurate.

Viktor Frankl wrote that between stimulus and response there is a space, and that in that space lives freedom (Frankl, 1946). I spent an entire essay thinking about that space applied to calm under pressure. Today I'm thinking about it applied to something quieter: the space between the news and the story I decide to tell myself about that news.

That space, today, lasts fifteen seconds. And the algorithm is designed precisely to keep me from using it.

This morning my thumb moved before I did. Same as every day.

But I managed to notice it before the first scroll ended.

I don't know if that counts as a victory. I know it's the only thing that, fifteen seconds at a time, I can decide to do differently.
